Black History Month at Dance Base

This year’s Black History Month theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.

It’s about challenging baked-in cultural stories that overlook the extraordinary contributions and achievements of Black people in the UK and across the world. It’s about uplifting Black storytellers – so those stories can be told right.

We are proud to present two workshops this month that speak strongly to this theme:

  • Roots | Divine Tasinda
    Saturday 12 October
    All levels
    A workshop that invites participants to learn about African dance and understand its origins. Roots will explore traditional and modern African dance through movement and authentic performance practices, highlighting the joy of African culture. Following the workshop, there will be a 30-minute conversation with Divine about her research on African movement, its evolution outside of Africa and how to protect and engage with African art in our modern western world.
  • African Contemporary | Qudus Onikeku’s Q Dance Company
    Saturday 19 October
    For participants aged 12-18
    Dancers from Qudus Onikeku’s Q Dance Company teach a workshop drawing upon elements of contemporary and Nigerian traditional dance through exercises, movement experimentation and play. The workshop will give budding dancers and participants a chance to learn from world-class performers, and will support study and insight into dance vocabulary for performing arts or dance students or youth dancers

Dance Base’s mission is to create the conditions for dance to flourish. And dance can only truly thrive when barriers to exclusion are removed. 

We recognise and work to address the specific discrimination that Black people face, not just in Black History Month but throughout the year. 

Through our EDI working group and action plan, we work to support, develop, and promote equality and diversity in all our activities and employment practices. We aim to establish an inclusive culture free from discrimination and based on the values of fairness, dignity, and respect.
