When familiar patterns return, can the body respond differently?

Recurrence is a solo research project by Glasgow-based dance artist Juily Chen, growing out of Quagmire, first presented at Shuffle Hip-Hop Scratch Night in 2025. Rooted in krump, it explores the tension between emotional restraint and the need to claim space, tracing how memory and habit return through movement.

Drawing on her own experience as a Chinese artist living in Scotland, Juily investigates how learned patterns of control and self-containment meet krump’s expressive force. Breath, repetition, rhythm, gaze and the movement between stillness and eruption become ways of examining what persists, what shifts and what can be reorganised.

At Dance Base, she will revisit Quagmire through improvisation and focused movement studies, bringing a year of intensive krump training and international exchange into dialogue with her theatre practice. The residency will deepen the work’s physical language and audience relationship while remaining connected to krump’s community roots.

Recurrence asks how change can be felt even when old patterns remain: through renewed presence, different choices and the ongoing work of returning to oneself.

About the Artists

Juily Chen is a Chinese dance artist, choreographer and krump practitioner based in Glasgow. Working across freestyle, theatre and community spaces, her practice explores how movement carries memory, identity and emotional pressure, and how individual expression grows through collective exchange.

Her work is rooted in krump, with contemporary practice informing her approach to rhythm, physical intention and performance. She has developed her practice through training and exchange in Scotland, Europe and China, alongside ongoing learning with krump artists from the United States and Europe.

Juily created and performed Quagmire at Shuffle Hip-Hop Scratch Night in 2025. Her performance and collaborative work also includes Hydrogen’s Ignite and the duet works Inner and It’s Buckin Absurd. She has undertaken artist development with The Work Room, Dance Base, Babel Theatre and Far From The Norm.

As part of Braveheart Fam, she co-organises and co-leads Braveheart UPR, weekly krump sessions in Glasgow. Community building and cross-cultural exchange remain central to her work, connecting studio research with shared practice.
