Sharing
Thursday 1 October| 16:00 – 17:00 | BOOK NOW
This sharing offers a glimpse into the developing world of Home Sweet Home, focusing on a duet between two performers and the relationship between movement and light. The work explores connection, distance and the spaces we create between one another. Light is treated not simply as an element that illuminates the dancers, but as an active choreographic partner, shaping the space, directing attention and influencing how the performers relate to one another. This residency provides an opportunity to test the relationship between movement, light and space in front of an audience, and to begin discovering what the work becomes when experienced live. The sharing will be an informal place to reflect on what was shown.
About the artist
Jemma Stein is a Scottish interdisciplinary artist and choreographer whose practice is rooted in human stories, connection and the ways our relationships, environments and communities shape who we become. Working across movement, film, text, light and visual imagery, Jemma is interested in creating worlds that invite audiences to recognise something of themselves within the stories of others. Her practice is collaborative and research-led, often beginning with people, places and the details of everyday life. She is particularly interested in how connection, or its absence, can influence our sense of belonging, identity and community.
Jemma’s choreographic practice has developed through both screen and live contexts, with a significant body of her work created for film and presented across the UK and internationally. Her film ‘Project C’ brought together 33 artists from around the world to collaborate remotely, exploring connection during a period of global isolation.
Her current practice centres on ‘Home Sweet Home’, an interdisciplinary choreographic world exploring ideas of home, belonging and connection. Following an initial period of research and development supported by Creative Scotland, Jemma is now beginning to translate this work from studio into live performance.
This residency marks an important step in that process: bringing her choreographic world into a live space, working collaboratively with artists and beginning to discover how the work can exist in front of an audience.
