About the Class

Autumn Term 2026
Monday 13th September – Sunday 13th December
Age:16+

Teacher: Tess Letham and Guest Teachers

Originally a modern response to Ballet, Contemporary is a global dance movement that incorporates a wide range of styles and practices. It is characterised by its use of space, floorwork, breath and creative expression.

At Dance Base our classes feature Cunningham, Release, Flying-Low, improvisation and more.

This Advanced/Professional Contemporary class is inspired by David Zambrano’s Flying Low and Passing Through methods. Class begins with playful group tasks that interconnect us to the space and to each other, travelling and spiralling in pathways through the room. We will then focus on specific movement sequences that explore gathering and sending the whole body, moving into and out of the floor with ease, efficiency and the joy of dancing together.

This class is suitable for those working at advanced and professional level of technique.

Please note: Classes are offered at Pro Drop In Rate of £5.50 for those who are in dance training, or who are actively working in the dance sector at a professional level in areas of performing, making, teaching and/or choreographing.

Meet the Teachers

Bethany Edwards

This class centres the unique joy that moving through space with others brings. Working with various tools we will explore physical specificity, technical proficiency and embodied imagination. This energetic class of floorwork and improvisation will hopefully have you sweating and smiling.

We will warm up with strength and technical exercises focused on moving across the floor, low to the ground and upside down, building up to longer sequences. Usually we will practice running to find pleasure in moving with power, speed and agility.

Through improvisation tasks that respond to practical, physical provocations we start to open our awareness into performance. Working alone and with others to practice witnessing and being witnessed.

About Bethany:
Bethany is a dance artist working across improvisation, performance, teaching, devising and creative facilitation.
She is a founding member of bad body chaos code, a pop-punk band working collectively to produce euphoric and surreal performances. In 2022 they took their debut album ‘Headliner’ – a comedic riot grrrl witchy extravaganza – on a European tour.
As a performer Bethany has created new works with choreographers including Becky Namgauds, Tim Casson, Tess Letham and Hannes Langolf. Touring across the UK and Europe in contexts as diverse as pubs, galleries, stately homes, theatres and high streets.
Bethany regularly performs improvisation solo, in duets and ensemble. She has performed with Collective Endeavours and Something Smashing across the UK. And performed solo at Roadhouse in Leeds and at TicTac Art Centre in Brussels.
She also works extensively in inclusive dance, currently as Artist Development Lead for Anjali, a dance company for artists with learning disabilities.
Within and beyond the dance world Bethany is interested in bodies as storytellers, working non-hierarchically and seeking out experiences of collective joy.
