Artist Director Recommends – August 2024

Check out some recommendations from Artistic Director Tony Mills for dance right here at Dance Base this Fringe, or online for you to discover from home or on the go in between festival shows.

For this instalment of Artistic Director Recommends, I’m going to point you in the direction of a talented young artist from Luxembourg called Isaiah Wilson. Isaiah trained as a dancer and is now a multi-disciplinary artist making work across dance, film and music. I first met Isaiah during a visit to a dance platform in Luxembourg. I was struck by both his charisma and the quality and variety of work he is currently making. When we talked he gave me his promotion pack (as you do in those situations). I looked down and it was not a USB stick, piece of card or unwieldy A4 folder. But it was a neat, carefully crafted booklet. Simple in design but full of texture. It was both a physical and visual experience. I think little things say a lot. And that that little booklet gave me what I felt was an indication of a commitment to attention to detail and craft. I am hoping that we will be able to bring some of his work to the Dance Base Festival in the coming years. But before then, have a look for yourself.

Let’s also not forget we have equally talented artists at home so I will take this opportunity to recommend Dance From Scotland which will be taking place at Dance Base this August. Featuring local emerging to established artists, such as Rob Heaslip, and all ages on our stages, a special debut from Christine Thynne and 3 Made in Scotland performances including The Show For Young Men.

This is a new work from Eoin Mackenzie featuring Robbie Synge (44) and new kid on the block Alfie (10). A piece about male relationships, I’m sure with Eoin’s care, Robbie’s experience and Alfie’s charm his show is going to be a smash. Tickets are already selling fast so book now so you don’t miss out.

Finally, I will draw your attention to one of our international artists. Nak Dara by Hasiymah Harith from Singapore is one I’m quite proud we are presenting this year. I first encountered her company P7:1SMA when I taught at their studio in 2019. I was then able to see the work during a visit to the Busan Performing Arts Market in 2022. A number of conversations later and they are making the journey to present this unique, touching and important piece in our Festival. Please check them out if you can.
