Matthew Hawkins

Matthew trained at Royal Ballet School but switched to contemporary practice as he wanted to exude embodiment.  

His switch saw him become a founding member of Second Stride and Michael Clarkand present his own work and studying Cunningham technique at source.  

During his career he has been awarded Jerwood Choreography prize, a Dance Artists Fellowship from Arts Council England, a Herald Angel award and Professional Development/Choreographic Futures support from Creative Scotland. 

Matthew's teaching experiences include open classes in Contemporary technique at London's Pineapple studios (1986-99), technique and choreography workshops at CNDC (Angers, France, 1991-2004) and guest teaching with Rambert and Random Dance Companies.  

At Dance Base he has taught students of all levels and capabilities including professionals, beginners, elders and those with special needs.
