Listen to the Amazon is a work-in-progress performance blending dance and movement together with spoken word. It is a piece which intends to give voice to the Amazon forest itself and the urgent call for protecting one of the biggest green lungs in our planet from destruction. It is a space to explore the connection between Western people with Amazon communities and, by highlighting this link, cast light upon the responsibility we all share in defending the Amazon’s life as well as our own survival. It is an opportunity to explore breathing as a central component in the relationship between human beings and the Amazon.
“We all know that we are alive because we breathe and we breathe because we are alive. But we often underestimate that we need a space for breathing, a shared space between human beings and other living inhabitants of the Earth, such as forests. I hope this performance will help understand the need not only to protect and respect spaces for breathing but also create new ones” (Valeria Levi, performer and choreographer of the piece).
