Dance Base and Scottish Dance Theatre are collaborating to support one Scotland-based independent dance maker to develop their choreographic practice by working with the Scottish Dance Theatre company for one week in January 2027!
The Dance Base & Scottish Dance Theatre choreographer placement will provide a local artist with the opportunity to undertake a week of research and experimentation with the Scottish Dance Theatre company with no expected outcome. This will be an opportunity for them to gain experience of working within a repertory company context, and to research and develop ideas in the studio with multiple dancers in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.
The opportunity will provide each artist with:
- A total fee of £1,260 (£750 for the Creative Week & £170 per day for three preparation days)
- Eight days engagement with Scottish Dance Theatre. This will break down as follows:
- Preparation: 3 days prior to the creative week: December 2026 – January 2027 (dates to be agreed with the company)
- Creative Week with the full company of dancers: 25-29 January 2027
- Mentoring and support from Artistic Director Joan Clevillé and the Rehearsal Director, and additional support from Dance Base
- Access to existing Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre costume and props stores. (Please note that the emphasis of this placement is on research and that the theatre won’t be able to provide making support from the wardrobe team)
- Access to the Dundee Rep Theatre stage will not be possible during the placement, but basic technical support in the studio will be available if required (for example, microphones etc.)
- Use of high-quality camera for documentation of the week
- An opportunity to host a sharing at the end of the week. This is not a requirement, but a possibility if the artist wishes to do so. The company can also facilitate structured critical feedback from attendees
- Travel expenses to Dundee and accommodation and per diems (if required)
- An additional budget to cover any access provision, including childcare costs, as required
