Emily Nicholl & Robert Gallagher-Lyall | Weaving

Monday 17 - Friday 21 March

Bob and Emily are developing a collaborative contemporary circus practice, exploring where their practices meet through partnering and juggling. The residency will support time for creating early stage choreographies and scores for moving with juggling objects together.
Throughout the residency they will share their different movement practices which both focus on carrying and being carried – Bob’s through object manipulation and juggling, Emily’s through partner acrobatics and partnering. A playful and improvisation based inquiry will focus on the relationship between each other and object, asking what movement choreographies are created from the qualities of an object – how the affordances of an object can offer pathways for movement together and a score through which the body follows. These acts of passing and receiving, and how we negotiate our bodies around passing and receiving, create perhaps a score for telling stories of our entangled interdependence with both each other and our environments. Our negotiations as a kind of dance.
The work sits alongside Emily’s wider project Waiting for Weight. Through working with objects, Bob and Emily explore specifically the things we carry and hold for each other, and how the work of support is done in community, passing them back and forth.

About Emily

Emily is a circus artist with a multidisciplinary practice interested in the overlapping roles of artist, neighbour, citizen, friend. She has recently been exploring a softer approach to circus due to living with arthritis and navigating a wildly fluctuating relationship with her own body. She has worked internationally as performer, acrobat, rigger, photographer, stage manager, producer and support worker. Performing credits include working with Ockham’s Razor, co-devising the award winning Tipping Point, Mimbre, Nofitstate, Nathan Johnston, Ellen Renton, Laura Fisher and OceanAllOver. Her collaborative project Waiting for Weight was supported by The Work Room and Manipulate Arts. She was Associate Producer for Manipulate Arts, Jerwood Fellow with Imaginate and is creative assistant to Greta McMillan in association with Oily Cart.
