Clare Adam & Lesley Howard | Residency

17-21 November

A new autobiographical duet driven by the quote; “disabled people often have no choice but to become advocates and activists in order to survive and get what they need and that’s not sustainable” – Erin Ekins (Autistic Advocate).

To date, this work has been years of private conversations between just us, sharing frustrations, tackling ableism and creating our own unique survival kit for how to navigate a non-disabled world. To put it nicely we are BURNT THE F**K OUT! We want to share through movement what it’s really like, the ups/the downs, frustrations, relentlessness and survival—could you imagine living the majority of your life in fight or flight mode?

We will approach this research using a variety of different techniques. Working collaboratively with Artist Jack Hunter and Afton Moran, we’ll explore pieces of writing/thoughts/humour, collected over the years, in regard to access, disability and ableism that we’ve experienced. Using them to generate and inspire movement/act as a soundscape for the work.

Sharing
Lesley and Clare will hold a closed sharing on Friday 21 November, 15:00-16:00

About Clare and Lesley

Clare and Lesley—a Dancing Disabled Duo— have been collaborating for the past five years. Recognising our individual lived experiences and reconnecting with our playful, animalistic roots, our work is a reflection of ‘just us’—colourful, curious and honest. Our movement vocabulary merges Autistic Stimming, Contemporary Dance and British Sign Language into one shared score, centring and prioritising non-verbal communication. Collaboration is central to our approach, creating spaces to feel empowered, safe and connected—using movement to navigate the world in which we live.
