Summer Residency Call Out

Farah Saleh 23 - 27 MARCH & 30 MARCH - 3 APRIL

Throughout the year Dance Base offer residencies to professional dance artists, choreographers and companies to develop their work. We strive to support artists at each stage of their career and welcome applications for projects at all levels.

Our residency programme is structured around three terms - Spring, Summer and Autumn – with space provided on a weekly basis, Monday – Friday, in two of our studio spaces. We offer a mixture of funded and unfunded residency weeks with a total fund of £15,000 available across each financial year.

Applications are made three times a year through an open call process. All applications will be read by the Dance Base Artistic Director Morag Deyes and members of the Artist Advisory Group – a group of artists who represent the diverse array of voices and lived experiences that make up the Scottish dance sector. The decision of who the residency weeks are allocated to will be based on who the group believe will:

  • Benefit most from the space and time provided
  • Have a positive impact on the professional dance community

For each residency week Dance Base provides:

  • A clean, warm studio space Monday – Friday roughly 09:00 – 17:00 (times vary per studio)
  • An average residency fee of £600 a week or in-kind studio space with the value of £600 a week, depending on the funding already guaranteed for the project
  • Artistic mentoring from Artistic Director Morag Deyes and/or Head of Catalyst Bush Hartshorn (on request)
  • Basic studio sound equipment
  • Free wireless internet
  • Exclusive access to a shared Greenroom, changing rooms and kitchen

As part of the residency week, each artist/company will be asked to provide:

  • A company class of 90 minutes to be taught to the professional dance community to share your practice and approach
  • An optional public sharing at the end of the residency week to share your process and gain valuable feedback from a live audience (this can take a variety of forms and can be discussed with the Programmes Manager)

Each term a number of weeks space will be allocated to the Dance Base Associate Artists, DEBS and Fringe Festival artists as part of their agreement with Dance Base. All other weeks will be allocated by the Artistic Director and Artist Advisory Group.

Please note that residencies are not open to those currently in full-time education or training. If you would like to discuss your eligibility please contact Kirsty Somerville, Programmes Manager,

How to apply:

Due to the current lockdown restrictions in Scotland we have made the decision to pause our call out for applications for the Summer term. This is to ensure we can honour our commitment to the Spring residency artists and reschedule weeks as required. We hope to reopen our call out once measures lift and will make an announcement on our website and social media when this is possible.

If you have any questions, or if you have already completed your application and would like to discuss how to move forward, please contact Kirsty Somerville, Programmes Manager,
