Monday 8 – Thursday 11 November 2021 | 11.00 – 13.00 Mon-Wed & 11.00 – 14.00 Thurs

Workshop | £0 - 100

Internationally renowned director Katrina McPherson returns to Dance Base to teach a 4-day in-person screendance workshop.

With a focus on performance and camera, Katrina will lead participants through movement-based practical exercises and reflective viewing-based tasks, designed to encourage experimentation and awareness of the form. Katrina will share ideas and research drawn from her own directing and cinematography practice, including using improvisation to develop dance for the camera, the embodied camera, and the empowered dancer in the context of dance on screen, as well as tips and techniques for filming the moving body.

Over the 4 morning sessions, participants will work individually and collaboratively to create their own short video-dance works, inspired by set tasks and drawing on the enquiry and principles explored during the workshop and with the option to continue their explorations in their own time, between the taught sessions. The workshop is open to participants of any ability or experience; however, the focus will be on creative practices rather than technical support.

Participants should bring their own cameras / iPhones / phones. Editing will be optional activity for those who wish to, and have the facilities to engage with this aspect of creating films, although the nature of editing and post-production will be part of the discussions for all.

Katrina McPherson is an award-winning director whose creative, scholarly, and educational work is at the forefront of the international field.

For over 30 years, Katrina has collaborated with numerous international dance artists with the resulting films, installations and on-line works presented at festivals, galleries, and venues.

A much sought-after lecturer and workshop facilitator, Katrina has taught worldwide. She is the author of Making Video Dance, a step-by-step guide to creating dance for the screen, published by Routledge in 2006, with a new edition released in 2018.
