If you have graduated from full-time professional training in dance or related disciplines within the last two years, then you are eligible to apply for a place on DEBS: Dancers Emerging Bursary Scheme. Up to four emerging dance and physical theatre artists are selected and the scheme includes:
Mentoring from an experienced dance / physical performance artist
Free professional classes at Dance Base from September to July
Free selected community classes by negotiation
Up to two week-long group residencies at Dance Base
Free studio space, subject to availability
We are delighted to announce the DEBS mentor for 2019/20 is Angus McLean Balbernie.
DEBS participants will be selected through a day of exploration at Dance Base on Monday 3 June, between 10.00-17.00 taking the form of:
· Contemporary technique class
· Choreographic/task-setting exercises
· Individual conversations & feedback with Angus

About the Programme:
I'm interested in how becoming a "dance-maker" can happen.
In how to make work as an ongoing practice, not just as an occasional, funded, occupation. in how an artist can compose, move, choreograph, direct, sketch, create in any space, any time.
I'm interested in what an audience is, in these times of uncertainty?
In ways of making and sharing work with, and outwith, the expectations of the funders and institutions. in exploring alternatives to the traditions of just presenting "finished" work. Of how process is equally valuable.
I'm interested in how the individual artist finds a regular practice and how that can be sustained, believed in, developed, dialogued, supported, and owned.
Making, dancing, performing, choreographing and directing are all deeply inter-connected, but can also be separated and opened up as individual areas of interest, specialisation, exploration and dialogue.
Through the year, I'll engage with mentoring each artist in ways that we both agree work best for them individually. This can be through times in studio, meetings, different mediated forms, Skype, email, 'phone calls ect. And with the whole group through occasional shared studio work and classes, group discussions, gallery visits, witnessing work, etc.
I would also like to share anything I feel like sharing, in terms of articles and writings from many disciplines, videos, information from odd side-roads etc, which I think somehow invite the artist to develop and explore an open, investigative, mind and body.
