About the Director

Janis Claxton Dance is an award-winning contemporary dance company led by acclaimed choreographer Janis Claxton. The company creates choreographed works for touring in small to mid scale venues and site-specific performance events for unique spaces.
The company has been based in Edinburgh since 2005 and is one of Scotland’s leading project funded dance companies. With a core team of locally-based dancers the company’s training-based methodology results in a unique movement voice underpinned by Claxton’s passionate commitment to movement research.

Janis Claxton Dance was Catalyst’s original and longest standing portfolio company. Catalyst has worked with Janis Claxton Dance since 2006, producing all of the company’s works including the award-winning Enclosure 44 – Humans! (2009) at Edinburgh Zoo, and most recently, the choreographic installation Chaos & Contingency (2013) for galleries and museums.

Currently Janis spends much of her time working in China, but we continue to support her practice in an advisory capacity.
Catalyst has worked with Janis Claxton Dance since 2006, producing all of the company’s works including the award-winning Enclosure 44 – Humans! (2009) at Edinburgh Zoo and, most recently, the choreographic performance installation Chaos & Contingency (2013) for galleries and museums.
