Twelve Days of Dance Base: LYDC go National!

Nicola Kenny

To start our Twelve Days of Dance Base, we’re spotlighting our in-house dance company for young people, the Lothian Youth Dance Company (LYDC)!

2023 saw them achieve recognition on a national scale in being selected to participate in U.Dance’s National Youth Dance Festival in Newcastle!

U.Dance’s event is a hugely important celebration; the largest youth dance festival, it provides a platform for groups from all around Britain to perform on professional stages, interact with each other, gain invaluable insight into dance careers and work with leading dancers. LYDC was one of only 3 Scottish groups selected for this three-day event.

Members of the 2022-23 company travelled to England. Once there they took part in workshops, group rehearsals and career talks with industry professionals. Finally they performed their piece ‘We and Everybody Else’ by Molly Scott Danter.

This was a huge opportunity for the dancers, a thoroughly deserved recognition of the time and effort they put into LYDC, and indicative of the high level of skill they’ve honed there.

Speaking on their experiences in LYDC, members commented; “One of the best things about LYDC is travelling away to perform.”

Continuing, they said; “I have had a great experience at LYDC. I have really enjoyed creating pieces to perform at different places and being able to take part in workshops.”

It is your support that makes it possible for us to build ongoing communities like LYDC. We at Dance Base strive to create a home for the arts, and participating in LYDC provides members with opportunities to flourish. They work throughout the year with professional dance artists and choreographers, expanding technical and creative skills and producing high-level performances.

What’s more, they’re benefitting from dance on a wider scale; the health and wellbeing impacts are physically and mentally lifechanging.
