Room 2 Manoeuvre is an Edinburgh based dance company, resident at the Brunton Theatre and founded by Artistic Director, Tony Mills. With a foundation in hip hop technique, Room 2 Manoeuvre firmly crosses into contemporary dance and physical theatre genres, as the company seeks new forms of expression highlighted by an original movement vocabulary.
We are very excited to embark on this residency at the Oulu Dance Centre in Finland. During this period we will work with both UK and Scandinavian BBoys as we explore the story of a BBoy crew as they begin a downward spiral to an eventual break up. This will form the basis for a new work entitled Without a Hitch. It will be an investigation of the characters and personalities that exist within hip hop dance culture and what happens when jealousy, ambition, apathy and anger manifest within the constantly shifting dynamic of a group struggling to move in the same direction. Our focus will be how to physicalise this story with hip hop and breakdance vocabulary. As an added twist, we will will also be looking at how this work can be given a slightly sinister veneer, influenced by the films of Alfred Hitchcock. How can related cinematic aspects and scenes contribute to the style and setting of the work, to create a world which is slightly off kilter. Our residency will culminate in a showing at the Oulu Dance Centre with an opportunity for discussion and audience feedback about the work. During our time at Oulu we shall also be delivering workshops and morning classes. We are hopeful that this will be the first steps towards a reciprocal relationship between Nordic organisations and our company.
