Dance/Connect

DanceConnect

Dance/Connect is a research project led by University College London (UCL) in partnership with Dance Base. UCL and Dance Base are running an eight-week block of online beginner dance classes to explore whether dance can support the mental wellbeing of young people (aged 16-24) living with anxiety. We are working with young people to deliver the project, and we plan to collect surveys, carry out focus groups, and use arts-based methods to explore young people's experiences.

About the dance classes

The classes will take place on Thursday evenings, starting from Thursday 23 September.

Class dates: 23 September, 30 September, 7 October, 14 October, 21 October, 28 October, 4 November, 11 November

The time of the evening class is still to be confirmed.

Taking inspiration from contemporary dance techniques and using an eclectic playlist of upbeat and relaxing tunes, the class will focus on fun, rhythmic exercises that get the body moving.

During the 1.5 hour session, we will follow a series of exercises led by the teacher. The class will start with a warm-up to prepare our body for moving, followed by technical exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles and help us become aware of our posture. We will learn some fun choreography that will  learn new movements and explore different dynamics. The class will end with a cool down and relaxation, helping us to stretch out the body further. There will also be time during some of the class to get to know the teacher and the other dancers in the group.

Over the eight weeks we will build on the same exercises and choreography, challenging our bodies and minds to learn new things and pick up new skills. These classes will be an excellent way to tap into the joy of moving to music, try something new and have fun getting a bit hot and sweaty!

The classes will take place online. No previous dance experience is required and all exercises will be talked through and demonstrated fully. To find out more about what participation in the research will involve and to sign up, visit the Dance/Connect website.
