If you have graduated from full-time professional training in dance or related disciplines within the last two years then you are eligible to apply for a place on DEBS: Dancers Emerging Bursary Scheme. Up to four dancers / physical performers are selected and the scheme includes:
Mentoring from an experienced dance / physical performance artist
Free professional classes and workshops at Dance Base from September through to July of the following year
Free selected community classes by negotiation
Up to two week-long group residencies at Dance Base
We are delighted to announce the DEBS mentor for 2017/18 will be Al Seed.
Al is a multi-award winning director and performer based in Glasgow. Working cross-artform, he specialises in the creation of highly physical, visual theatre, often with a strong dance element. As well as creating solo shows, directing casts in his own productions, and guest directing for theatre and dance companies from across the UK and abroad he also works extensively providing professional development opportunities.
His current focus in this field involves providing mentorship to artists working in such disciplines as dance, physical theatre and circus who are seeking to create their own work, and helping them develop strong content for their shows / acts. This approach is motivated by the common issue of physical performers graduating from vocational courses with a depth of training in physical technique – and a sense of ‘style/s’ – but a lack of experience in working rigorously with ideas and concepts; and in translating these ideas and concepts effectively into a performance setting.
If you are seeking a chance to develop your dance / performance technique then this particular DEBS opportunity is NOT for you. If you are interested in exploring, developing and strengthening the ideas that are being communicated through your work, and investigating how this content can be structured to most effectively reach an audience, then this opportunity definitely could be for you.
Activity will involve a mix of practical performance classes, individual and group discussion sessions, set research tasks, and one-on-one mentorship. All of this activity will of course involve a translation of the process into the vocabulary in which each individual is creating work.
This year’s DEBS participants will be selected through a day of exploration at Dance Base on Monday 19 June, taking the form of:
A practical movement session
Group discussion and task-setting exercises
Individual conversations with Al
If you are interested in DEBS please apply to firstname.lastname@example.org in writing with a statement of interest (1-2 pages) outlining:
