Emerging Choreographer | The Royal Opera House/The Royal Ballet
With the collective expertise from across the Royal Opera House, The Royal Ballet facilitates projects that support choreographers to find new pathways and platforms to develop and share their work. We encourage artists to take risks with choreographic language, and to engage in innovative partnerships to enable them to create their best possible work. The Royal Ballet’s commitment to the art form and choreographic development has led to the creation and establishment of the Emerging Choreographer position.
The programme is designed for aspiring choreographers at or near the start of their career, looking to develop their skills and experience, to support a successful choreographic career including within a classical ballet context. The programme is open to applicants of all ages, who feel they can meet the key selection criteria below.
This is a tailor-made programme of learning through a blend of observation, participation, collaboration and practical experience, including:
· The opportunity to make work on Royal Ballet dancers
· The chance to observe established choreographers as they create large-scale work on The Royal Ballet
· The chance to present work at the Royal Opera House to key people working in the sector and the wider public
· Mentoring and guidance from The Royal Ballet’s Artistic and Producing team.
The role is offered as a fixed term contract for 23 months, working part time, average of 20 hours/week, with a salary of £25,000 p.a. paid pro rata to part time working.
The ideal candidate will be able to make a positive contribution as a team player and an ambassador for the role, and able to demonstrate these qualities:
· Experience as a professional dancer and performer, in ballet or contemporary dance
· Experience of creating choreographic work that has been performed in a professional context with the ability to develop original choreographic ideas
· Ability to respond in a positive way to mentoring, feedback and direction
· Demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork and harmonious working relationships at all levels
· The highest standards of attendance, reliability and professionalism across all aspects of the work
· Commitment to managing own learning and continuous professional development
