Every year, Dance Base offers up to four dancers and physical performers a place on our Dancers Emerging Bursary Scheme. The scheme includes mentoring from experienced dance artists, free professional classes and workshops at Dance Base, free selected community classes, up to two week-long group residencies at Dance Base and free studio space.
We are delighted to welcome Angus McLean Balbernie as our mentor for 2019/20.
About the Programme:
I'm interested in how becoming a "dance-maker" can happen.
In how to make work as an ongoing practice, not just as an occasional, funded, occupation. in how an artist can compose, move, choreograph, direct, sketch, create in any space, any time.
I'm interested in what an audience is, in these times of uncertainty?
In ways of making and sharing work with, and outwith, the expectations of the funders and institutions. in exploring alternatives to the traditions of just presenting "finished" work. Of how process is equally valuable.
I'm interested in how the individual artist finds a regular practice and how that can be sustained, believed in, developed, dialogued, supported, and owned.
Making, dancing, performing, choreographing and directing are all deeply inter-connected, but can also be separated and opened up as individual areas of interest, specialisation, exploration and dialogue.
Through the year, I'll engage with mentoring each artist in ways that we both agree work best for them individually. This can be through times in studio, meetings, different mediated forms, Skype, email, 'phone calls ect. And with the whole group through occasional shared studio work and classes, group discussions, gallery visits, witnessing work, etc.
I would also like to share anything I feel like sharing, in terms of articles and writings from many disciplines, videos, information from odd side-roads etc, which I think somehow invite the artist to develop and explore an open, investigative, mind and body.
Jenna has been passionate about dance for her whole life. She most recently trained at The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, where she gained her BA (Hons) degree. Before that Jenna was at Edinburgh College, where she first developed her love for choreography.
As well as creating dance work, Jenna is interested in how choreography and one’s imagination can be a powerful personal development tool for people of all ages. Prior to studying dance, Jenna worked for a youth charity; she also holds an honours degree in International Development and maintains her community-led interests by working with people of all ages through the medium of dance.
Jenna is hugely excited by the opportunities that the DEBs programme offers, especially the time she'll get to spend in the studio creating, thinking and sharing.
Johanna Padron is a dance artist, performer, choreographer and an emerging filmmaker graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Dance from Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS).
Johanna was part of the Artist in Residence Programme at Edinburgh College during 2018-2019 getting experience as a dance teacher, coaching students from Portobello High School, and delivering workshops to HND acting students from PASS. She has collaborated in “Fragments and Gestures”, an innovative performance with custom-designed costume and choreography alongside artworks by Jenny Saville and Robin Rhode at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. She has performed in “A Portal to the past”, an event held in partnership with Historic Environmental Scotland and Riddles Court, dancing a historical piece from the period of King James VI.
Johanna is particularly interested in dance and film. She has written, produced and directed her own short films over the past two years. Additionally, she participated in the Dance for Camera workshop by the award-winning director, artist and author Katrina McPherson, and has taken part of the Screendance workshop with Omari Carter, founder and artistic director of The Motion Dance Collective.
She is currently working with other artists to improve her skills in dance for camera, through space exploration and experimentation, using camera equipment and editing software to produce dance showreels, promo videos and independent screendance projects with the aim to exchange talents and reach a wider audience.
Lucy May Jardine
Lucy May is from Dumfries and began training from a young age with Dumfries School of Dance. Simultaneously she trained and completed both nationally and internationally as a Baton Twirler.
After leaving school Lucy moved to Edinburgh where she studied dance for three years at the MGA Academy of Preforming Arts.Upon graduating in 2018 Lucy undertook one year training in Physical Theatre based in Summerhall Edinburgh.
Lucy’s focus has always been making theatre and feels she’s really begun to develop her unique voice within the last year, she is so thankful to Dance Bass for allowing this opportunity it continue her journey.
Drawing inspiration from vaudeville and burlesque Lucy enjoys working with complex subjects in lighthearted formats. Fascinated by the relationship between performance and technology she aims to make work for a digital format.
Lucy is honoured to part a of the DEBS program and excited to work with both Angus and Dance Base.
Niamh O'Loughlin is Dance Artist currently based Dundee, Scotland. Originally from Dublin, Ireland Niamh graduated from The Scottish School of Contemporary dance with a First Class Ba Hons degree in 2018. Since graduating, she has taught for organisations such as Scottish Dance Theatre, Shaper/Caper, The Byre Youth Theatre and Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust. She regularly performs with Movement based ensemble Third Thread.
Niamh is interested in inclusive practices, improvisation and choreography. Her most recent work "An Fathach Mór" ("The Big Giant") has been supported by Scottish Youth Theatre's Making Space program in partnership with Dundee Rep theatre. It is a children's work exploring the legends of The Giants Causeway and the cultural links between Ireland and Scotland.
