Board Vacancy: Health and Social Care

Castle view from Dance Base roof

Dance Base Scotland is looking to recruit a Board Member with specific experience of arts in health and social care.

Dance Base is Scotland’s National Centre for Dance. When we say in our mission statement that we exist to encourage and celebrate the potential for dance in everyone, we really mean it. “Everyone” covers someone who feels nervous about picking up some disco moves all the way up to professional artists pursuing careers within dance. There’s more information on what we do and how we do it here.

As you’ll see, we are already developing and delivering inclusive, joyful work that provides major benefits to health and wellbeing. A prime example of this is our Dance for Parkinson’s Scotland programme, delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet, through which we use dance to support people across the country living with Parkinson’s.

We want to build on our offer in this area; we feel we have built up valuable skills and experience and that demand is likely to grow. The benefits of dance scarcely need repeating; we know that dance offers more than just physical benefits and we know this because we see it happening in our classes at Dance Base. Companionship, society, a shared non-competitive experience; all of these can offer joy, comfort, stability, and a secure platform on which to rebuild and grow. We are in the process of recruiting a Head of Dance for Health and Wellbeing to develop and deliver our programmes in this area. But we also recognise that Health and Social Care is a massive sector under enormous pressure, and that in order to navigate it in a way which is both positive and constructive, we need to learn more of the sector’s language and to make the right connections.

To this end we are seeking an individual with expertise in health and wellbeing who would be interested in joining the board of Dance Base. The first responsibility of the Board is the good governance of the organisation. But our Board has been carefully recruited to bring committed individuals with specialist knowledge from their own sector, so that they can support Dance Base staff and advocate on behalf of our special skills and resources. The person we are looking for from the health and social care sector will become part of this matrix of knowledge and understanding. The skill set we are looking for includes:

  • work experience at a senior level within the health and social care sector, or in a related academic role, with a legacy of authority and credibility
  • professional knowledge of and connections with the sector across Scotland
  • advocacy and networking skills, especially in the sector
  • experience of board level management within the voluntary sector
  • interest in dance
  • commitment to the concept of improving health and wellbeing through dance activity

Board positions are not remunerated, but offer an opportunity to bring your specific skills and experience to support the important mission of our organisation.
