Residency 3-14 November
Angus Balbernie
SLANTED
These two weeks asks about contradictions. About what it is to be older and how our stories and bodies grow and are shared? How they move towards individual ways of "leaning into the light”.
I welcome older (and younger) movers, artists interested in working with the contradictions of light and darkness, youth and age, movement and story, music and silence. I'll work with improvisation, development of individuality and performance forms.

I've directed around 80 professional pieces around the world over the last 35 years, and still move between directing, performing and teaching; exploring a deep love of wilderness. Several months ago I reached 60. My sister gave me an old notebook, our father's last collected reflections, written when he was 60 and nearing the end of his life. Now 60 myself I'm pulled towards these fragments and how we "collect' our lives, how we move again. I guess I'm a director more than a choreographer, a collector of other people's movements, stories and ideas.

Barry Lopez asks "How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one’s culture but within oneself? If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.”
I want to explore this and see what shapes up.

Class: 10-11am Monday- Thursday. Each morning open warm-up will be cranky stuff, exploring how a 60 year old body might move and improvise, drawing from training of Tai Chi in China 40 years ago and 35 years of Anatomical Release and Contact Impro. Soft stuff, breathing, flowing, improvising, looking for some light…
