Ola mein petit amici, and I’m going all Eurolingo thinking about the potential bursary recipients who are auditioning on April 20 (tell any graduates near you) and whether we can find a way to connect them with European dance houses who may also have bursaries like this. Actually, if they don’t maybe we could encourage it?
Please let me know if there are any schemes like our bursaries that you know of outside the UK. Meanwhile, I’ll get emailing of course.
Look below and you’ll see a fascinating bit of research about sleep paralysis headed up by ex-director of RJC - this and a few other corners of the science world are popping up on my horizon a lot these days.
An amazing young woman, Dr Bettina Blasing,
came in for a chat the other day. As well as editing and launching a book (out soon) about dance and cognitive behaviour, she's researching cognitive interaction technology in animals and insects. Bettina is based in Germany and is a lone voice up til now, fighting the good fight in the science community to open out the research into dance. Got me thinking again about why we dance. Take it beyond the mating ritual story, then of course the question is the old chestnut of 'why make art?' It’s a corker and always keeps me entertained.
I was able to tell Bettina that Janis Claxton, Matthew Hawkins and Sue Hawksley in particular are both looking at human behaviour and memory in deep and intelligent ways, and I really hope this is a connection that keeps momentum.
Well done to All or Nothing and Strange Bird Zirkus for a great night at Out of the Blue on Saturday. They and Conflux really are taking aerial to new places and the atmos was just fantastic too. If you're interested in developing your work in this way go to www.conflux.co.uk where Jen Paterson's and Lucy Deacon's details can be found, as well as aerial and circus near you.
Mo Morgan has been running dance for people with Parkinson's disease here for a term now, supported and inspired by dancers from our patron, Mark Morris Dance Group. It's truly life-changing, as we know dance can be - and on that note we are always on the lookout for dancers who want to develop more outreach teaching in general. I hope you’ll get in touch if you have an idea that you’re suited to this type of work but maybe didn’t know where to start? For training and advice either contact me or Janet Dick on
