Our fantastic new Lothian Youth Dance Company for talented dancers aged 14 – 19 from Edinburgh and the Lothians is now well underway.
LYDC meets one Sunday each month in Dance Base for day-long sessions where they develop their contemporary technique, learn more about working together as a company and rehearse for upcoming performances.
The group also meet for several week-long intensives at various points in the year to develop new choreography and work on other dance skills more intensively with different choreographers and dance tutors. So far Tamsyn Russell created the company's first piece of repertoire Tune Yard in Spring 2016 and Claricia Kruithof worked with the company in Autumn 2016.
In their first year LYDC have performed at a whole host of events in Scotland including Dundee Dance Festival, Dance Base Fringe Festival and PRIME Autumn 2016 Tour. Upcoming performances include Dance Base's annual Christmas Show and Dance Fest at Festival Theatre in January 2017.
Speaking about their experience in the company, participants, said:
LYDC is a place where you can go and just be yourself and have fun … When we dance together any stress or anything your worried about goes away and we just get to do what we love. It's such a great opportunity.
LYDC has been an amazing experience! Since joining LYDC I have gained many new friends and also been able to be a part of exciting events.
LYDC has helped me discover my potential so much more and has opened a whole new world for me that I've always been interested in, and now I get to do it for myself!
Auditions for the 2017 company have now been held.
The cost to join LYDC in 2017 is yet to be decided. It will likely be similar to the cost for 2016 company members which was £300.00, payable in full at the start of the year or in instalments. There will be 3 means-tested bursary places available.
