Active-NationWhat is Active Nation?

Active Nation is a Scottish Government initiative which aims to energise and motivate Scots to increase their physical activity in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and beyond.
Using the spirit and excitement of the games, Active Nation will motivate Scots of all ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes to get more active and get more out of life, which in turn will deliver a lasting legacy which will benefit the whole country.   The message - Get active, have fun, feel good – is at the heart of the campaign.

Why is this initiative being launched?

In Scotland, only 39 per cent of adults currently meet the recommended levels of physical activity.  Active Nation will help accelerate the progress towards achieving the national target to get 50 per cent of Scottish adults and 80 per cent of children up to the recommended levels of physical activity by 2022.

The initiative builds on existing national physical activity and sport strategies – ‘Let’s Make Scotland More Active’ and ‘Reaching Higher’ - and will work in conjunction with the Scottish Government’s ‘Take Life On’ Health and Wellbeing campaign to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle to Scots.

Who’s supporting the campaign?

A host of celebrities are supporting this campaign, from Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Rihanoff to Radio Presenter Bryan Burnett.

Kristiana Rihanoff is supporting the campaign by encouraging Scots to take up dance for a healthier lifestyle.

“The fact of the matter is anyone can dance. No matter how out of shape you are or how old you are, learning a new skill such as dancing can make a real difference to your fitness levels. And the added bonus is you’ll have fun at the same time!"

How can you get involved in this campaign?

You can get involved in the Active Nation campaign by making physical activity part of your everyday life.

Regular physical activities can be anything from walking the dog to dancing round your living room.

Setting your own personal activity goal is the first step to getting active, having fun and feeling good.

Once you have set your personal goal why not share it on the Active Nation Facebook page and inspire people to set their own personal goals.
