With the emphasis very much on fun, our 80s Icons class will make you feel atomic; Aerial Skills will teach you to fly; and Burlesque is sure to release the inner show-girl. These classes are a broad mix of styles and vary greatly in terms of level and workout. The level guide below pertains to Aerial, Burlesque and 80s Icons. Burlesque Improvers is designed for those already initiated in the world of old-fashioned burlesque and concentrates on the ‘3 Cs’ of burlesque – concept, character and choreography – as well as advanced peeling, posing and teasing techniques! This class will challenge the individual performer as well as offer fun-filled troupe work.

Burlesque Intermediate builds on the burlesque essentials of concept, character and choreography in a class that uses advanced peeling techniques, props (including chair and fan dance) and troupe work honed in the Improvers class. A fun-filled class that concentrates on individual and group performance techniques and works on developing acting, as well as dance and peeling skills.

Unleash the beast that is your inner 80s wannabe and tay-tay-tay-tay take a trip back to double denim, ra ra skirts, leg warmers and more in this brand spanking new, high-energy course. Celebrate everything from Flashdance to Footloose, Madonna to MJ and even Jane Fonda. Get physical and let's put the ham in Wham!

Dance Base teachers
Golden is a taste of the wonderful dance delights on offer to the over 60s at Dance Base. This entry-level course will give those who have never danced before, and those who already enjoy dancing, the chance to learn new styles or revisit long-forgotten steps. With a sampling of ballet, jazz, contemporary and tap, whet your dance appetite and exercise both your body and mind. This course is free to dancers who have never participated in a Dance Base class before and is a great introduction to our programme for over 60s.

This term will continue to look at dance-makers past and present. The series will also prepare for the companies visiting Edinburgh: Northern Ballet, Matthew Bourne, Scottish Ballet and for the performances from the Bolshoi, relayed ‘live’ to the Cameo Cinema. The hope is also to entice a few of the choreographers in residence at Dance Base to come and speak about their work. An exciting term.

Through dance you will develop awareness of your body, express yourself and make connections with others in a supportive environment.
Aerial Skills Beginners
Level 1 I £135 (£108)

Climb, swing, hang and suspend your way through this class. Starting with a warm-up and conditioning, the class will focus on learning the very basics of aerial skills, spending time on silks, rope and trapeze. This is suitable for complete beginners but we advise that you should have a good level of fitness and upper-body strength to get the most from the class.

Suitable for both beginners and those with more experience in the air. The beginners group will focus on learning the very basics of aerial skills, while the improvers will push their existing skill base. You’ll be learning moves and sequences on various aerial apparatus including static trapeze, silks and ropes. We advise that you should have a good level of fitness to get the most from the class.
Level1/Beginners is for those with no previous experience in the style, and will act as an important introduction to the techniques.
Level 2/Improvers has more of a focus on character, and requires a degree of confidence in the technique. You will be encouraged to be creative and develop your own style.
Level 3/Intermediate class is ideal for those with at least a year’s experience in Burlesque, and those who have used props before (such as fans and chairs) in their routines.
Level 1/Beginners aerial is appropriate for people with no previous experience, although a degree of upper body strength is required to support your own weight on the trapeze and silks. There will be some work on the floor as well.
All Levels is ideal if you have previous experience in the air, but would like more time to hone your skills and concentrate on techniques. You will need good upper body strength for this class.
All levels is high energy and guaranteed to give you a great dance workout. Although no previous experience in a dance class is required to enjoy this class, you will have to love dancing to 80s music!
Bare feet and comfortable clothing for Aerial, and indoor trainers and loose clothing for 80s Icons. For Burlesque participants, a small heel is optional. Your teacher will give you plenty of notice if additional items are required for class.
