Morag's Chat
Tuesday 18 August 2009

Phew! One hugely well received programme down and there's even more. Sad to say farewell to the companies that were here, but oh look, there's more on the festival horizon!
Catch this week's goodies in'...and then some' and you know what, the Shimmy Skinny is doing such a great job in getting all this fresh new information to you that
you can simply scroll down and get the new goss right here on this page.

In the mix, there's a great opportunity to be part of the HamletZar Danish/Iranian collaboration as they hold an audition workshop at the end of August for the residency later this year. Watch this space for more details. read more...

UnsungUnsung
Fiona Campbell enters an Irish session with dancing and live music.

When Rex Levitates' artistic director Liz Roche is questioned about her reasoning for bringing Unsung to this year's Festival Fringe, she states that, "it was something different for the company with a very strong live element to it." As the history and context of Roche's ideas for creating the piece unravel, however, it appears that Unsung offers much more than mere originality and live music. It simultaneously questions the notion of cultural identity and tradition, whilst seeking to explore their place within the modern arts and - perhaps on a deeper level - society itself. The impetus for such exploration stemmed from Roche's experiences and observations as an Irish citizen:  read more...
Heads UpHeads Up
Morag Deyes reveals the final tricks up her sleeve in the Heads Up programme

There's a real twister for your fringe sensibilities on the Friday 21st bill, as each slot in today's Heads Up is punctuated by the frankly camp and so of course fabulosa Chris Wilson and his er...campadres. Great old school sassy jazz and glam from a local and much adored choreographer will guide you through the showcase. Gilmore Dance were formed by Natasha Gilmore - ex Protein dancer now based in Glasgow - and are offering a scene from One Up One Down, their new show which follows their great Festival 08 hit, The Blank album. One Up One Down is a show about women under pressure - which of course I know nothing about,  so will watch with naive fascination. One Up One Down is at Zoo Venue 124 at 12.25 until the 31st.
Rosalind Masson is a fascinating dance and movement artist from Glasgow who is constantly evolving. Her work for this bill has been inspired by her recent trip to New York. Foundations Dance Collective are a young group of choreographers who have recently graduated from training read more...
ME (Mobile/Evolution)ME (Mobile/Evolution)
Erin McElhinney is charmed by a Moving Evolution

There's a few key signs that tell you you've just seen a good show. You can't wait for someone to ask you how it was, so you can tell them all about it, for example. Or, as in this case, you wake up the next morning you still have the show's final, joy inducing image at the forefront of your mind's eye.
With Mobile/Evolution, Claire Cunningham has created something wonderfully simple, but undeniably powerful. Split into two halves, with a short, set-tidying break, both deal with the same core subject matter and (yet) are equally absorbing. As a young girl Cunningham's life changed when she was given her 1st pair of crutches; but that was BD, Before Dance, as she calls it. Now - in Mobile - an extensive collection of the utalitarian objects litter the stage, and as Cunningham moves with and speaks about them, these oh so functional objects begin to form a beautiful, hypnotic construction, spinning in space.
It sounds all too trite, but - in Evolution - watching the sheer pleasure that Cunningham exhibits whilst dancing, along with her dry sense of   read more...
