James' Chat

Hello,
Opportunity knocks. No, we're not launching new classes taught by Les Dawson (though that could be quite fun). We do however have news of some amazing opportunities including a new Outreach programme for school leavers, a chance for young dancers to perform on stage at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre and a talent search run by that cheeky Irish chappie Graham Norton.
If you're not feeling so talented yourself then why not come see the professionals do their thing at our FREEDAY PREVIEWS? It's your chance to see the results of our professional residency programme. The resulting showings are always interesting, engaging and varied - best of all it's free and on a Friday - so now you know how the name came about.
Drop-in classes are teaming with January resolutions; it's not too late to keep yours. Now that we're past the officially most depressing day of the year (yesterday) and seeing a whole extra 40 minutes of daylight than we were a month ago it's a great time to drop-in and dance. Get a wee health kick in yoga, pilates, Wake-Up Warm-Up and Alexander Technique. Click here for full listings.
Have a great week,

Outreach News More Choices, More Chances
|
|
We all know about the good work we do in schools with young people and especially those young people who struggle to stay at school. But what happens to them once they leave school, many of them at the earliest opportunity, after Christmas? Well, in the past we lost most of them. Many are classified as NEET - Not in Education Employment or Training and now re-named as More Choices, More Chances.
Well here at Dance Base we are doing just that; giving a group of recent school leavers more choices and more chances. Starting this week we have four Christmas leavers working with the Outreach Programme in an intensive package of dance opportunities. The group will take part in a wide variety of dance classes, including contemporary and ballet, to further develop their dance experience. Alongside this, they will also attend professional residency rehearsals and go to watch dance performances at theatres. This new work is part of our on-going partnership with Careers Scotland who will be meeting the costs of the young people's travel and a lovely arrangement we have with the Edinburgh Festival Theatre who will pay for the theatre visits. This is a very exciting development for the Outreach Programme and one which we hope to expand on as part of our commitment to supporting vulnerable, young people. We also hope to include their own views on this experience in future d-mail's....so watch this space for an entirely different take on what we do and how it feels to be doing it!!

Lucy Boyes [new work] 19 - 23 JAN
During the residency Lucy Boyes will be working alongside the Edinburgh-based composer Sam Richards and Glasgow-based photographer Chris Logue.
The artists' work will be based on exploring the collaborative process through images, sound and movement, with the intent of setting up a new Scotland-based collective of young artists.
FREEDAY PREVIEW studio showing: Friday 23 Jan, 16.00
Plutôt La Vie By the Seat of Your Pants (working title) 19 - 23 JAN
Plutôt la Vie are in the process of exploring ideas for a piece of visual, movement theatre involving three men and the image of a chair. Three men and a chair.
In 'By the Seat of Your Pants' we want to explore a performance of extreme simplicity in terms of environment. Adhering to this simplicity will focus our work and necessitate that we explore ideas and solutions to this restriction in terms of a visual story.
Of necessity the work will focus on character, relationship, movement, space, and interaction with the audience. The story is as yet unknown, but will reveal itself through image, action, rhythm and laughter.
FREEDAY PREVIEW studio showing: Friday 23 Jan, 17.00
